One: The Word of God for the People of God

All  Thanks be to God

This week saw the passing of the season and now it is fall.  Fall is about comfort. Favorite sweater in the evening.  Hot chocolate, and something made with apples.  Hamburgers give way to stew,  shepherd’s pie hearty soups.  The occasional cool evening fire.  Fall, just so cuddly.  We like comfort things. We work hard we should have some comfort things in our lives.

We get used to comforting things.

We get so used to words of comfort to be found in the gospels nice stories, of healing and being made well, the image of Jesus nice white robs lovely blue mantle, and fluffy beard,  that sometimes it becomes very hard for us to hear the challenging words of Jesus.

It can be the challenges that push us to grow. To move us forward. That is what today’s Gospel does

We find today a continuation of the theme we say last week.  Last week the disciples had a disagreement on who of them was the greatest. This week we see an expansion who should and should not be invoking Jesus’ name.   They are like kids almost climbing over each other to get to Jesus to tell him that some else is casting out demons in his name not even a follower.

You can almost see Jesus shake his head and wonder at these guys.

He says do not stop him for no one who dose a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us.

Then the language gets gritty.  Many scholars will argue that Jesus is now speaking metaphorically at this next point and newer versions of the Bible start doing so editing leaving out vs 44 and 46 which state “Where their worm never dies, and fire is never quenched in reference to hell.  This line finally appears in vs 48.  So in older version comes after each of the cutting off and plucking statements.  Pleasant stuff for a Sunday Morning.

Someone this week asked me if I believed in Heaven and Hell.

My off the tongue answer was I don’t know.

What is hell.  It is what we make of it.

Dante in the Divine comedy has the inscription at the entrance to Hell say.

Through me is the way to the sorrowful city. Through me is the way to eternal suffering. Through me is the way to join the lost people.  Abandon all hope, all ye who enter.

T. S Eliot writes What is Hell? Hell is oneself, Hell is alone, the other figures into  it merely projections.

And still another States. Hell Madame, is to love no more.

A woman came to see her minister. She was sobbing uncontrollably, and in between her sobs told her Minster that she had just had a horrible argument with her husband. She said, The last thing he said to me was you can go to the Devil the pastor said What did you do? And the woman replied I came straight to you.

The Devil himself had probably re-designed Hell in the light of information he had gained from observing airport layouts.

Hell is what you make and the Hell Jesus Speaks was a place just outside of Jerusalem

It is a deep narrow gorge southeast of the city called the Valley of Ben Hinnom in which it was said that rebellious and unfaithful Israelites once offered up child sacrifices to the pagan Gods.   It was forever condemned by Josiah as an eternally unholy place.

Later the valley was used as a garbage dump by the city dwellers.   Thus the place of destruction by fire in Jewish tradition The Greek word Gehenna Hell commonly used in the New Testament for the place of final and eternal punishment. Comes from the Hebrew name for this valley.   Because it is a dump it is a place of rot of criminal corpse and rotting carcasses  Hell is a dump, Gehenna.

Jesus is the one who seeks to save the lost, to rescue from the tragedy that is hell.   To not see us wasted, used up and tossed away.

God does not spend his time creating garbage. You are not to be wasted, used up and tossed away. In some garbage heap of humanity.

God sees in us great potential  As Charlie Brown states The greatest burden in life is to have a great potential

God creates beauty and light.  You are that beauty and light.  See that person next to you  that is God’s creation, it is beauty and light.   There are those that always look for the beauty and light in each person. God is always about balance there is always light and darkness.

All of God’s creation has value. Ann Lamont: stated that "You have created God in your own image when you are convinced that God hates all the same people you do."  We are created in God’s image light.

Verse 50 serves as a concluding thought. It is the Promise and challenge.  The disciples are encouraged to have salt in themselves. They were to be change agents in the world in which they lived and to be at peace with one another.

Salt brings out what is hidden. Have you ever put salt on a watermelon.  The effect seems paradox . Salt brings out the sweetness of the watermelon. You are the salt of the earth in your call to be disciples you are to bring out the best in other people.

Jesus asks us who will you serve.  Remember his words Whoever is not against us is for us.  Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.

A clergy person for Scotland tells this tale.

A king who had 3 daughters once asked them how much they loved him. The first said she loved him more than all the gold in the world and he was pleased. The second, not wanting to be outdone, said she loved him more than all the precious gems in the world - and again he was pleased. The third and youngest who was always so loving and sweet said that she loved him more than all the salt in the world. He was outraged. What could be more common than salt. He was hurt and upset and stormed out. The youngest daughter, realizing how hurt her father was - went to the palace kitchens and ordered the chef to put no salt in the king's food until further notice. After 2 days without salt in his food, the king ordered the chef to come and see him - and he complained that for 2 days the food had been so insipid and tasteless. He demanded an explanation. The chef stammered an apology and bowed deeply and told the king of the instructions he had received from the king's daughter not to put salt in the food. It was then the king realized the tremendous compliment his daughter had paid him. It was he who gave her life its flavour and meaning.

God is Jesus Christ through the action of the Spirit gives life its flavour and meaning

It starts here.  Here we begin to find our hope our comfort our renewal and our direction and from here it begins with One small word of encouragement, one gentle touch on a shoulder. One simple word of appreciation. Being but a presence.  That alone can make the difference, and save someone from there personal hell that they may be in.

Here is hope and it is our hope in God that surrounds us like a blanket providing us the comfort we need on the rainy cold nights of life and in that moment we see that we are not alone.

Prayers of the people

Slow me Down  Slow me Down

Still my restless mind Still my restless mind

Quell my fears Quell my Fears

Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul

Fill me with your love Fill me with your love

God of Truth God of Truth

God of love   God of love

Lord of light though your divine thought all things came into being. Your divine light in dwells in all things. Be with us through your Spirit to see that light within us and use the gifts you have given each of us to help light the way for others so that they may see you in all things.

In your divine creation there is both joy and sorrow. There is both life and death. Your creation was one of balance.  We know that our world has become one which does not seek the balance but looks to its own ends. Humanity in its own desire has created a hell for many to exist in  War and poverty injustice are heavy on the scale.  May your spirit so enlighten those in your world to change and work to restore the balance that is so needed.

We own that at times in our enthusiasm sharing the good news of the Gospel we failed to understand that other cultures possessed their own rich spiritualities that reflected you. For the injustices that have been laid on the Indigenous peoples who welcomed us in the beginning we seek the courage to not just hear the truth but to own the truth. May we in hearing the truth walk with our Indigenous sisters and brothers on a path of reconciliation.

We know that in this journey of life sickness. We pray for those that are in need of healing and strength for the journey that they are on.   Give us such courage to walk with these people whom we name before you.

We give thanks for our community of faith. We are grateful that you have brought us together.  May you bless the work that we do in this place.  May we always be salty for the faith and allow your light to shine though us and this sanctuary.  May all who come through our doors know the welcome that can be found in you.  We offer you these prayers  though Jeus Christ who gifted us the great prayer that binds us as one. Saying

Offering

All that we give is first a gift from you O God. It is a joy to invest in the mission of the church, both as a gathered community in this place and as a scattered people who day by day offer a cup of Cold water in Christ’s name to the people who are thirsty. May our offerings help to reach where we ourselves cannot go. Amen
