Like any true North strong and free Canadian most conversations start with a brief reflection on the Weather. Not sure why It’s a Canadian thing. Sorry, oh that is a Canadian thing as well. We had a winter fog this week. I did live in Newfoundland for a bit and when they say the “fog is rolling in” truly it does roll in.
All weather of course present there challenges but Fog is I think the most moody. It can completely obscure your vision. It can drape the world in shadowed shapes. It can be just there enough to illuminate the light. It is settled and thick or wispy and moving. Fog is by it’s nature frightening. No scary movie graveyard scene would be complete without fog.
Consider the dramatic way Fog plays in the End of Gone with the wind.
Miss Melony is dead. Ashley is lost in his grief and Scarlett runs out into the early Atlanta dawn struggling her way through the swirling Fog living out her long time night mare of being lost in the fog. Poor Scarlet always searching for something never understanding her direction her gifts her compassion. Well at least not until the end. After all tomorrow is another day.
In the film business fog is used to create “atmosphere” In my thought it is very much like the future. We can’t see what is in the future, we may at times see shadowed shapes of what might be we get moments of light illuminated and we catch a glimpse of what next.
And where fog can be by its nature somewhat frightening so is the future.
Like Scarlet running through the fog Gospel is about being off into the unknown.
The fog of life. A swirling mist and we strain to gaze through it, to try discern our direction. We see a depth in life full of nuances, complexities ending and beginning.
And in living this life we stumble upon by design or chance encounters with the Holy. Moments that change us but defy description. For Isaiah the clarity of his vision of God drew him to the challenge of a prophetic call. For Paul the impact of Christ appearance to him turned his life around. For Simon and the first disciples the challenge of the call came with abundance of the catch. When we stare into the mists of our lives we may likewise see there is an awesome presence of God who calls us to follow. To cast our nets in deep water
You see Religion for the most part is easy, (theology can be challenging) however. discipleship is more difficult. To follow where at times you don’t know you are called to go.
It is hard to discern the call of God at times in our lives. What directions we should go. At 10 I wanted to be a doctor At 14 I wanted to be a lawyer, at 19 I wanted to be a musician, at 21 I decided I wanted to be a clergy at 61 I am still clergy but looking ahead…an artist or archeologist. The mist is thick.
As one commentator stated We all need to have our own personal garage sale and get rid of those unnecessary things we tend to hold on to.
For one moment there on the beach they must have looked at the nets, the boats, the family the everything familiar looked at Jesus, looked at the nets, the boats, the family the everything familiar looked at Jesus And thought I am scared skinny. Looked at Jesus and walked forward.
Fear is a powerful emotion that can totally govern our lives. And it is fear that sometimes prevents us from answering the call of God.
Fear when truly looked at is the root for so many things that can be wrong in a society. It is that which causes us even in our faith to stumble.
We let our fear cause us to hesitate. “I'm not good enough, I'm to old, to young no experience”. We resist. “We can’t do this we don’t have people we have never done it this way. We will lose people.” “fear feeds on an in ability to open ones eyes.
To hear what is being truly said. Fear can easily write the script that we will follow without us even questioning. Fear creates it’s on narrative.
When we listen to God’s call the script is changed “We are good at what we do, and we are not too old. We can do this. We will have enough people, Let’s try this a different way Let’s do something completely different. All will be fine. We will trust in the Lord and the Lord will provide. Not everyone will get in the boat and at times the hardest thing. This week the gospel is one of several “Call stories.” Were those simple fisher folk afraid of what was to come if they said yes
Go out to the deep water and cast your nets he said . Look friend we been out all night long. There are no fish. Listen to me go out and cast your nets in the deep water he said.
I don’t know why we are going out again, we are tired, been there , done that. This guy likely never has been in a boat. Land lubber
And then….By Jonah’s beard the net is full.
Something funny is going on here—something more personal than this big pile of fish."
"Don't be afraid," Jesus said, "from now on you will catch people." Peter's life's work is emerging, and he and his friends ... left everything to follow him."
It’s about listening to the direction God would have you go.
The truth is that when God take’s control or calls us it scares us.
Where do I begin how do I respond? How do I do this?
Jesus squats in the dust. He looks around at the assembled ex Roman tax collectors failed fishermen carpenters, unwed mothers, and women of ill repute and says “ I’m going to take over the world. The revolution begins here. And guess who’s going to help me? “ And some 12 or so , were crazy enough to believe him, defiant enough to go against the world’s names for them. Such unreason is our name for salvation.
Discipleship begins with an understanding of our faith of how we will live out that faith. It starts with a purpose that is rooted in our spiritual self.
Is that what people are looking for? Spiritual depth to life. Yes I believe it is. People are looking for Spiritual depth to their being. How are we going to meet that call.
Like Peter James John, we are in the words of Alice Mann just like the first century Christians foreigners in a strange land needing to share the incredible experience of God.
We begin from the center that Divine presence in each of us. We begin from our core beliefs and move outward guided by the word of God in Christ.
We are like Peter James and Andrew, we are ordinary people We are called each in our lives to Teach, lead, love, plant and grow, heal and guide, and create. God not only calls us to where we are but to where we may go.
To not be governed by our fear but strengthened in our faith.
You have named your faith To live our discipleship with integrity and grace. They are not just words, they are the core of who we are as a community of Faith. These words are the words that empower our mission.
It is your mission to take forward the vision of a vibrant faith Church Community from the past into the future,
to provide a safe place of worship for all who call this their spiritual home.
To greet people where they are in their spiritual journey and promote spiritual growth a place where people will find support and be able to renew their faith. A place of welcome and a place for community to gather. You have committed yourselves to God as disciples of Jesus, to reach beyond our own faith community to seek right relations and be supportive to the wider community and world
Don’t be afraid to act God has faith in you. Values you, calls for you for the gifts you have to share, to be one in Christ empowered by the Spirit acting on his words and following his lead.
From the gospel of Doctor Suess “O the places you will Go.” And we do not go alone. After all tomorrow is another day and God is with us. Thanks be to God

We entrust these names to you trusting in your love and wisdom
We come to you in this time in this place to open our hearts to you with our own personal prayers seeking the divine at the center of our being.
